Dear Phi Theta Kappa Supporters,
The officers and advisors of the Beta Delta Omega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa would like to take this opportunity to inform you of our 2008 accomplishments and to let you know what we have planned for 2009.
Our chapter had an active year in 2008. Our events included Blood Drives in collaboration with the Life Stream, the Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties and a Walk-A-Thon to raise money for Bridge2Peace, an organization that provides educational support for the victims of the tsunami and civil war in Sri Lanka. Our officers hosted a series of four film seminars around the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship topic The Paradox of Affluence, and participated in an essay contest that asked students to consider how The Paradox of Affluence can be found in our world today. Students organized monthly fellowship events to build camaraderie between officers and chapter members including an event that brought together three different chapters from Southern California. Several officers attended the Regional and Leadership Conventions in 2008 and brought their insights back to our chapter to help it grow and become more successful. We completed the year with our annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive in which officers and members assembled turkey dinners and gift baskets for over 30 MSJC families in need.
For our efforts we reached 5-Star Status, the highest ranking a chapter can achieve and we won a Pinnacle Award for inducting close to 200 new members to our chapter. In addition, our Vice President Ashley Cook won the Phi Theta Kappa Leaders of Promise Award for her lively role in organizing events and inspiring her fellow officers into action and chapter member Alex Haley-Liu won the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship and a Phi Theta Kappa award to attend New York University in 2008. We were also recognized at the Regional Convention in March for our participation in Regional Projects such as Chapters United and Bridge2Peace. These successes would not have been possible without the support of faculty, administrators, members, and our alumni.
One of the biggest challenges our chapter faces is raising funds for our officers to attend Phi Theta Kappa conventions where they can hone their leadership skills and learn about Phi Theta Kappa community service and scholarship programs. Our board of student officers has grown from four students to thirteen students this year and the majority of them will be running for reelection to serve during the 2009-2010 school year. Our chapter principally relies on fundraising and donations to function. We would greatly appreciate any donation you would like to make to our chapter to help support our student officers and members who work hard year round to lead and organize scholarship and community service activities at Mt. San Jacinto College and in the local community.
If you would like to make a donation, please send a check made out to "Mt. San Jacinto College" to the address listed below. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at some of our events in 2009!
